Activity #2: Electronic Mail - Save your file as 02-E_Mail_LastName_FirstName

For this activity we will focus on e-mail. It's the most popular application on the Internet. Read the Harness E-mail article and answer the following questions. Save as E-mail.

Questions:
1. What is e-mail? What devices can be used to send e-mails? List some different file types that can be attached to e-mails.
2. Describe the path an e-mail follows from when it is sent to when it is received.
3. What two things do you need to send an e-mail? What two protocols (software) are also required to make it happen?
4. What allows you to send more than a few words of text?

Not only can you send info in the body of the e-mail, but you can also attach files and create a signature line, which is text or graphics that appear automatically on every e-mail sent by you. Business people might include their company name, telephone number and address in their signature line.

Activity #3: Spam - Save your file as 03-Spam_LastName_FirstName

Alas, there is a dark side to e-mail. And it's called spam. Plainly it's defined as unsolicited e-mail. That means someone's gotten hold of your e-mail address and is trying to sell you a product, service or idea. It can be incredibly annoying!

1. Read Why is Spam Bad and briefly summarize.

2. Read 10 Tips to Stop Spam and add a summary of the methods to your spam file. If the headings make sense to you, use them only.

Now for some humour. Want a degree in Spam? Visit Spam University!

Post your own personal comment on the idea of Spam.  The comment parameter is open.  POST your answer in the Student Blog Comments Page.

Activity #4: Web-based E-Mail - Save your file as 04-Web-Mail_LastName_FirstName

Your ISP, Internet Service Provider, can provide you with an e-mail address. For example Bell Canada Enterprises runs Bell Sympatico. You may have seen email addresses such as myname@sympatico.ca. Similarly Cogeo and Rogers provide internet access and e-mail services.

Alternatively, you can use a web-based e-mail service. This requires an internet connection and using the online service to store your e-mails. Hotmail seems to be very popular but Google's Gmail is gaining ground in popularity. Do some research and answer the following questions on a new page in your E-mail file:
  1. In your opinion, what are the features that make Hotmail so popular?
  2. In your opinion, what are the features that make G-mail so popular?
  3. Why would someone prefer their ISP's e-mail service to a web-based one?
  4. Name 2 other online email services that consumers can register.
  5. In your opinion, explain which web-based e-mail service you like the best.  Explain why.  Justify your explanation. POST your answer in the Student Blog Comments Page.
